Rooftops have become famous in film and television for a great many different reasons. They can be a distinctly romantic location where two characters find themselves on their own and above the usual concerns of daily life below. Other stories use rooftops to up the stakes, with a slip or misstep not only leaving them open to the dangers approaching, but also to a potential fall.
Now, not all of the most iconic and famous rooftop scenes are made equal. In fact, one that sticks in the minds of audiences didn’t use a rooftop at all. In 1999, The Matrix made waves, particularly for its use of special effects. One of its most famous scenes, which you wouldn’t think would require a digital backdrop, was the bullet-dodging rooftop segment. That whole area was digitally re-created.
For the legendary scenes and settings below, that isn’t the case.
The Isle of Capri, Italy, is a stunning location in and of itself. However, one building overlooking a cliff and the azure of the surrounding waves has become iconic. Casa Malaparte sits on the eastern side of the island. Curzio Malaparte built the home himself in 1937, and by 1963, the glorious rooftop and its surroundings became iconic.
A Jean-Luc Godard masterpiece, Le Mépris used the perfectly flat rooftop to offer some serenity and contrast to the devolving, spiteful meeting between Paul and Camille while she’s trying to sunbathe. Particularly of note in the legendary film is how, when coming down from the rooftop, the marriage deteriorates with each advance down the steps.
Jumping to a much more recent and modern use of a rooftop, one of the most iconic scenes in The Walking Dead arrived in its second episode way back in November 2010. ‘Guts’ saw Rick Grimes find a bunch of other survivors and, logically, flee to the rooftops as the zombies flooded the streets. This rooftop isn’t much to look at, which certainly served the purpose, and is found at 106 Ted Turner Dr SW, Atlanta, GA 30303.
Filming in these locations across Atlanta, and Georgia at large, helped to ground the TV show with audiences and even spurred on what is now a massive production industry in the state. While the series didn’t stay on the rooftop for long, it’s still among the most memorable scenes, embedding it as a pop culture icon. It certainly enabled them to create many spin-offs, flirt with a film, and create several official games for casino online sites. Even at the end of 2025, new The Walking Dead games were coming out, with the latest being TWD Lucky Tap.
James Bond films love a dramatic set-piece, with the Daniel Craig run being particularly filled with them. In Skyfall, one of the more memorable moments comes from Bond’s pursuit of the villain on a motorcycle across the rooftops of Istanbul. This chase took place over the tiled roofs of the famed Grand Bazaar, and it wasn’t his first time there. In From Russia With Love, the Bazaar is also a central feature. Taken 2 also took to this skyline.
Rooftops always add an extra bit of oomph to a scene, regardless of the context, and in these outings, they proved pivotal to creating iconic TV and movie moments.
