If you are a fan of the ocean, you will love Barcelona. The city has around 3 miles of easily accessible beaches, and within just a few hours of driving distance, you can visit some stunning coastline that is over 360 miles long. Starting at the southernmost tip of the Ebro Delta and continuing north to the French border, the Catalan coast is a long and winding length of coastline.

Beyond the city itself, tourists can choose from various adjacent coastal getaways, including ancient seaside villages, peaceful beach stretches, and vibrant resort towns.

City Beaches

Barcelona's beaches offer diverse recreational options, whether you want to engage in beach volleyball, rollerblade, go for a swim or lie out in the sun and cool off at the city's beaches of San Sebastian and Mar Bella in Barceloneta and Poblenou. With frequent and affordable flights to Barcelona (BCN) available from major European and international cities, these sun-soaked shores are never far away. However, if you want fewer crowds and calmer beaches, it's worth going a little farther out.

The nearby beaches of Sitges, Gava Mar, and Castelldefels are accessible by either vehicle or train. Each has its own unique ambience, and you will find gorgeous white sandy beaches at both Gava Mar & Castelldefels, though Gava Mar does not have nearly as many chiringuitos (beach bars and restaurants) as Castelldefels does.

Tarragona

Tarragona's Roman ruins and lovely beaches provide an amazing experience for a weekend escape. You can lounge in the sunshine next to some Roman ruins, enjoy lunch at a medieval plaza, and then watch the waves crash along the beach in an amphitheatre.

This laid-back seaside town offers a delightful combination of history and beach life, making it an attractive option for weekend getaways to Barcelona. You can watch the sunset over the Mediterranean from the Mediterranean Balcony, stroll through the quiet streets of the old city, and see the ancient Roman fortifications, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Rooftops

If you're looking for a little opulence, a hip spot, or a place to relax, Barcelona boasts 360-degree rooftop experiences to suit your every want. On the eighth story of the GH Central in the Gothic Quarter is the Sky Bar, one of the most notable choices. Visitors who are not staying at the hotel can drop by starting at 1 pm, after 7 pm, a reservation is necessary with a minimum order. Elegant decor complements the light Mediterranean fare and superb beverages.

On Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, at the lovely Casa Bonay, you'll find the rooftop chiringuito, a beach shack-style bar, perfect for a change of pace. Some signature dishes from the bar include teriyaki chicken wings and grilled beef with chimichurri. A variety of natural wines is also available. It is advisable to reserve a table in advance for the rooftop bar, which opens at 6 pm.

Sagrada Familia

No trip to Barcelona would be complete without seeing the Sagrada Família. With its astounding size and beauty, this stunning cathedral designed by Antoni Gaudí belongs at the top of your must-do list. A highlight of this magnificent display of beauty includes its towering spires, beautiful stained-glass windows and intricate ornamentation. There are also terraced viewpoints on the top of the towers for some fantastic views over Barcelona. However, you need to reserve your tickets ahead of time to guarantee entry into this remarkable site.

Final Thoughts

There's no shortage of activities in Barcelona for visitors to enjoy. You can soak in the sun on beautiful beaches, admire Gaudí's incredible works, enjoy the wonderful food, experience life in a medieval city, and see the Mediterranean Sea, but only if you're willing to do a little planning ahead.
